Naxals attack BJP convoy in Dantewada; Kills MLA, 3 police officers

Naxals killed Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Bheema Mandavi from Dantewada, three police officers and a driver Tuesday evening by attacking a convoy of party leaders with an IED blast followed by a round of firing in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada, which falls in the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency and to go into polls in the first phase on April 11.

Mandavi was in the last vehicle of the convoy and the blast impact was very huge that it created a crater on the road.

Death of Mandavi has been confirmed by DIG anti-Naxal operations P Sundar Raj.

He said, “BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi killed in naxal attack in Dantewada.”

The leaders were traveling for the Lok Sabha elections and at the time of attack the convoy was between Kuakonta and Shyamgiri in Dantewada. The state police escorting Mandavi’s vehicle too came under the powerful attack.

The three police officers killed are District Force jawans Chhagan Kuldeep, Somdu Kawasi and Ramlal Oyami, and the driver is identified as Danteshwar Maurya.

CRPF said, “Between Kuakonta and Syamgiri in Dantewada, the convoy of BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi came under an IED attack today. The escort vehicle of State Police came under the blast. 5 personnel of Chhattisgarh State Police are critically injured. Reinforcement of CRPF has been rushed.”

For the April 11 polls more than 80,000 security personnel as well as many drones have been deputed in and around the Bastar region.
