Two-time Member of Parliament from Kota-Bundi constituency of Rajasthan, Om Birla, could be the next Lok Sabha Speaker.

Om Birla is a popular leader in Bharatiya Janata Party circles who had been MLA in the state thrice. With 25 years experience of legislative procedures he seems to be a fit Speaker in a NDA dominated House for the party.

He rose from BJP youth wing but lacks seniority unlike several of his colleagues on treasury benches like Maneka Gandhi and Virendra Kumar.

NDA has 353 members in the Lok Sabha and BJP itself has a comfortable majority. However, non-NDA parties like Biju Janata Dal, Apna Dal, Mizo National Front and YSRCP have supported the selection of Om Birla for the chair.

Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi confirmed support of Shive Sena, BJD, Mizo National Front, Akali Dal, National People’s Party, Lok Janshakti Party, JDU, AIADMK, Apna Dal and YSRCP.

Meanwhile, Congress named its senior leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdury from West Bengal as its leader in the Lower House following a NO nod from Rahul Gandhi for the post.

Receiving a letter from the single largest party in opposition Chowdhury said, “I have been given this responsibility. I was asked to stand in the front. I said okay. I am a foot soldier and foot soldiers stand in front. So I will fight as a foot soldier.”
