Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has adviced people not to share Aadhaar number in public including through social media site as it is not allowed and there’s a norm for punishment to it.

The move comes days after TRAI chairman R S Sharma shared his Aadhaar number on Twitter challenging hackers to harm him. Many others followed doing the same with their own Aadhaar numbers.

For about four years earlier Sharma was director general of UIDAI.

UIDAI further added if any individual is found using Aadhaar number of other individual for identification or authentication, he or she would be liable to prosecution.

The move is aimed to stop misuse of Aadhaar number where biometrics authentication is not required.

Aadhaar number in India is identity for various services, subsidies and benefits. It is a unique identity and contains unique identity number.

UIDAI has been reqularly mentioning in its media campaigns people should not publish, display or share their Aadhaar number publicly.

UIDAI added in a media note, “Doing Aadhaar authentication through somebody else’s Aadhaar number or using someone else’s Aadhaar number for any purpose may amount to impersonation and thereby a criminal offence under the Aadhaar Act and Indian Penal Code.”
