A related bill was finally passed in the Lower House of the Indian parliament Thursday that bars instant divorce through speech, letter, telephone call or WhatsApp message among Islam following people.

Triple Talaq Bill Passed In Lok Sabha

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, passed in Lok Sabha with consent of most of the leading parties in the Opposition voting in favor of it and with this the practice of saying Talaq three times would become illegal and void.

The bill was earlier passed by the Union Cabinet.

The bill will now reach the Upper House where the ruling party lacks majority and it is learned a combined Opposition can resend to a House Select Committee for further study.

Several Opposition members including of Congress and Left parties slammed the bill citing it is poorly drafted.

The bill was strongly opposed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Muslim League and AIMIM.

AIMIM chief Owaisi said the bill violates fundamental rights of the Muslims.

He added, “The triple talaq Bill violates fundamental rights of Muslims. There is an absence of consistency with the existing legal framework. The Bill says the husband will be sent to jail, and it also says he will have to pay allowance… How can a person in jail pay allowance?”
